Unit: Industry Safety Training

Blood borne Pathogens – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Give at least three examples of workers who are at risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • List the three ways exposure to blood borne pathogens commonly occurs.
  • Describe at least five key aspects of a Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.
  • Explain how to properly use PPE and appropriate housekeeping methods to protect against exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • List three important steps to take if exposed to a blood borne pathogen.

Fire Prevention and Protection – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three parts to an appropriate exit route.
  • Discuss at least four characteristics of an effective exit route.
  • Give four reasons for developing an emergency action plan.
  • Name the required elements of a fire prevention plan.
  • List at least four of the five classes of fire extinguishers and the types of fires they put out.
  • Describe at least four requirements for proper maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.

 Electrical Safety – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Describe four types of injuries that may result from contact with electricity.
  • List the three main electrical hazards that may be encountered at a worksite.
  • Discuss at least three methods of protection from electrical hazards.
  • Describe the function of a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
  • Name at least three warning signs or clues that an electrical hazard exists.

Personal Protective Equipment – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the two primary means of protecting employees from workplace hazards prior to considering personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Explain what should be included in PPE training.
  • List PPE that may be used to protect the eye, face, head, feet, hands/arms, bodies and hearing.
  • Identify hazards that are lessened or eliminated by using the appropriate PPE for eye protection, hearing protection, foot and hand protection, face protection and body protection.

Walking/Working Surfaces – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Define the terms: floor hole, floor opening, wall opening, standard railing and standard toeboard.
  • Discuss at least five requirements to consider in order to avoid walking/working surface hazards related to floors, walls, holes, stairways, platforms and ladders or scaffolding.

Back Injury Prevention – Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic physical structure and purpose of the back and spine.
  • Understand low back injury prevention strategies and techniques.
  • Identify activities and conditions that contribute to low back pain and injuries.
  • Understand how to modify tasks to prevent injury to the back.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of good lifting techniques for various conditions.
  • Understand the importance of fitness and weight control for maintaining a healthy back.

Basic First Aid Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance and techniques for controlling bleeding and preventing physical shock.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to stabilize and protect a person with fractures or other serious injuries to prevent further damage.
  • Identify the emergency treatment needed for various types of burns and provide initial care until emergency personnel arrive.
  • Identify various eye injuries and the appropriate treatment for each type, including first aid measures to stabilize the injury and protect the eye.
  • Identify the symptoms of choking and perform the emergency steps necessary to restore the airway.

Lock Out/Tag Out Procedures Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of LOTO for the prevention of serious injury and work related deaths.
  • Understand the basics of isolating potential hazardous equipment prior to maintenance.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of isolating a variety of machines and the importance of asking a supervisor about proper procedures for working on a specific machine.
  • Identify potential hazards in the workplace that could release dangerous energy if not properly locked out to tagged out.
  • Understand the importance of never removing a “tag” from any machine under maintenance or scheduled for maintenance, even if no one appears to be present.
  • Understand what to do to acquire specific procedural steps for the placement, removal and transfer of lockout devices or tagout devices, and a description of who has responsibility for them.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the three categories of employees that require different levels of training.
